A new rule extending the restricted licence period for any restricted drivers who receive demerit points comes into force today (7 May).
The Government announced changes to the driver licensing system in February making it cheaper and easier for young people to get their driver licence, while at the same time encouraging driver safety. The new system comes into effect on 25 January 2027.
Under the new system, drivers will need to keep a clean record while on their restricted licence before they can apply for their full licence.
Any restricted driver who gets demerits points will have six months added to their restricted period, extending the time before they can apply for their full licence.
The extension to a restricted licence will apply every time demerit points are received. The same demerit rule applies for over 25-year-olds on restricted licences.
